Afgelast: I throw myself into the middle

Arend Pinoy / HKU Theater

Akademietheater, kleine zaal
Start 12:30, End 13:30

Do we as ‘modern people’, need more rituals? A study by third-year students from the HKU actor training school.

Are there any rituals left in our society? How far away or how close are we really from who we REALLY are, what we REALLY think, what we REALLY desire? Do we dare to show this to each other? And is there such a thing as REAL at all?

With the use of grotesque and intimate rituals, the makers want to create a ‘free space’ in this performance. A place where lonely, lost characters can let go of their demons. In complete trust. Everything is allowed within this space: all the crazy things you would otherwise never say out loud, all of the frivolous or savage fantasies, everything here is simply allowed to be free together. No judgment. What happens here will have no consequences outside of this space. Everything is allowed, so as to be able to let go of it afterwards. A kind of mental health boost in overdrive.

about the makers

HKU Theater is the perfect place to study, experience and practice various disciplines of the theatre world. The HKU has been at Tweetakt for more than 15 years with a show that is specially made for the festival. In addition to third-year students of the theatre school, theatre design students and theatre teachers-in-training are also involved in the performance. Every year the students are supervised by a professional stage director. This year it is Arend Pinoy.

Director and choreographer Arend Pinoy studied theatre at the RITCS in Brussels and attended the Ex.e.r.ce dance training by Mathilde Monnier in Montpellier. Pinoy is a director and a choreographer, a dancer and an actor. For him, dance and theatre form a whole, it is not an or/but an and/and story. Feelings are sometimes based in text, sometimes expressed in dance. Dance and theatre complement each other, create an unbroken fluid movement and tell the same story. Tweetakt regularly presents performances by him, for example LaSt ChAnCe, (2013) and I’m always in for a party with interesting people (2015), which he directed for HKU Theater. In 2017 the show Too Old To Die, Too Young To Try by Das Lemniscaat appeared at Tweetakt. Pinoy directed the alumni of the theatre school who have joined forces in this Utrecht theatre collective, and Tweetakt produced it.
