An absurd physical performance about a village beyond the woods.
A forest annoyingly stands in the way.
It does look beautiful.
With its leaves, branches, and here and there some moss.
But still…
It’s in the way!
Behind the forest, there are sighs, complaints, and whining.
Occasionally, we see a tuft of hair.
Suddenly, a chair flies through the treetops.
With the third-year actors of HKU Theater, Elias De Bruyne creates a performance where the actors flourish. Where, for once, it’s about the actors and not heavy themes, dressed up with sets or fancy lighting. A performance where actors show what they’re good at. Acting, pretending.
More about the creators
HKU Theater and Utrecht Conservatory in collaboration with Elias De Bruyne
Elias De Bruyne (1988) graduated from the mime program at the Amsterdam University of the Arts in 2016. As an actor, he has performed with BVDS (Boogaerdt/van der Schoot), Maas Theater en Dans, and Tg Elektra, among others. During his mime training, he developed an untapped physicality and a strong desire to create performances himself. Elias’ work often revolves around his own daily questions about life, love, and nature. He tries to bring the natural world into the theater, and then to manipulate it: idiosyncratic, visual, and musical. He often says that his performances are “about NOTHING so that EVERYTHING can happen. Pausing together, forgetting that the world is turning so that maybe we can disappear from it all, from everyday life, together.”
