A performance about a constant search for a place you can call home.
A performance about a constant search for a place you can call home. “I Want to Be White” is a solo performance featuring storytelling and spoken word, in which Femi van Elshuis explores what ‘being black’ means to her, both for herself and for an outside world that constantly pushes and pulls at a self-image longing for peace. She raises a plethora of questions such as: Do I feel at home in the Netherlands? Do white people dream of being black? Why do I only talk about black and white?

Femi van Elshuis (2001) studied at the Amsterdamse Toneelschool and Kleinkunstacademie. Due to her felt necessity, her work often revolves around themes such as identity, community, and exclusion, which she presents to the viewer in an honest and often poetic manner.
Nowhere does “I Want to Be White” – actually a rather blunt title for this nuanced work – become heavy; Elshuis’ performance style is too infectious and quick for that. – Theaterkrant
