an ever-evolving performative act that questions how and why we observe animals and what it means to be human in that context.
In this project, Geert Belpaeme reworks material from his previous creation “De Dieren” into short performances outside the theater space, inspired by his current research into contemporary clown practice. The performances are adapted to each location, audience, context, and atmosphere, taking on various forms, from installations and interventions in public spaces to full-blown clown gags. Each time different, yet always on the eerie edge between humor, tragedy, social critique, and freedom, at the intersection of dance, performance, and mime.
More information about the creators
Geert Belpaeme is a theater maker, performer, and teacher/researcher at KASK (School of Arts Gent). He creates productions that blend theater, circus, performance, dance, and philosophical experiment.
Playfulness and abstraction from an unrestrained imagination are predominant features in all his projects. His artistic language sometimes resembles a minimalist form of clowning and plays with the gaze and expectations of the audience.
In addition to l’hommmm, his collective with Mats Van Herreweghe, Geert also co-founded the company “de polen” in 2016 with Bosse Provoost, Kobe Chielens, and Lieselotte De Keyzer. In that same year, Geert received the Roel Verniers Prize for his solo performance “First.”
