A dynamic interplay conveying the profound emotions of ‘Generation Z’ in a striking manner.

Six performers from different families, cities, and countries introduce themselves and take a stand. They are the ambassadors of their generation. Through movement and interaction, they explore the vulnerability and strength of youth. Hopeful and determined. Propelled, supported, and carried by the soundscape of dozens of voices of other young people from around the world, interwoven into a universal sound carpet. The dancers move to the rhythm of music composed of interviews and recognizable tunes, embodying the digital experience of modern youth. This creates a dynamic interplay of expressive movements, body language, and sound that strikingly conveys the profound emotions of ‘Generation Z’.

More information about the creators

Beating Choir / Chœur Battant is a production between the Canadian Théâtre Le Carrousel & the Belgian BRONKS theater for young audiences. Three youths from Quebec engaged in an artistic exchange with three Brussels youths. The performance is a continuation of the online platform Creative in Solitude, which choreographer and director Zoë Demoustier and Annemie Boonen established during the pandemic, where young people could share their feelings through artistic expression.

Zoë Demoustier (°1995) is a performer and choreographer. She became interested in the arts as a child after seeing a performance by Kabinet K and fABULEUS. She studied Mime at the AHK Amsterdam and Directing at the RITCS Brussels. The body is the starting point for her visually strong performances in which she combines dance and mime. She links them to engaged subjects and creates documentary choreographic works. In 2021, she made her debut with the solo Unfolding an Archive. In the same year, she became an ambassador for the Day of Dance, for which she portrayed future dance makers in an online dance documentary. Since 2022, she has been associated with Ultima Vez as a choreographer, resulting in the production What Remains, (selected for the Belgian Theater Festival). In 2023, her latest production, Beating Choir/Choeur Battant (Le Carrousel & BRONKS), premiered in Montréal and will soon tour in Belgium and France.

Marie-Eve Huot co-founded the Canadian Théâtre Ébouriffé in 2007. She is both a director and performer. Her direction of Suzanne Lebeau’s Une lune entre deux maisons earned her the Prix LOJIQ/RIDEAU Francophonie (2013). Her first production, Nœuds papillon, also played in France, Poland, and Mexico. In 2021, Marie-Eve Huot became the artistic director of Le Carrousel, after being associated with the company for 13 years. Marie-Eve is deeply involved in the theater world. Among other roles, she was director of Théâtres Unis Enfance Jeunesse for six years and served on the executive committee of the Chantier féministe under the direction of Théâtre Espace Go.

“This unclassifiable performance – combining dance with theater, music, and video – is a deeply brilliant and moving work in which Gen Z presents itself to the world and to the era in which we live.”
