Festival Tweetakt is an annual arts festival in Utrecht for everyone, with theater, music and art by (inter)national creators.
A magical and musical show with a hint of nostalgia for anyone who has neighbours.
In a street far away from any natural surroundings, people and other animals are living close together. They know each other, and yet they don’t. They live like passing ships in the night, but they are together.
The downstairs neighbour is hatching a gigantic egg. ‘Her’ from next door is always ill but never needs anyone. A tiger girl prowls the streets at night. The piano teacher in the house on the corner doesn’t work and plays only to himself. And me, I’m a rabbit. Tomorrow, I’m hosting a party.Muziek van Beneden (Music from downstairs) is a family show full of laughter and compelling music. The set is a wonderfully imaginative, with strange birds in the lamppost, neighbours sneaking a peek, freshly laundered whites on a clothes horse, and so much more.
“Such beauty, so many layers, such poetry, and most of all: such a precise labour of love. Everything is so meticulously thought out, every last detail, every scene is imagined as a painting in itself.” – Dagblad van het Noorden ★★★★★
”A noisy everyday life, but lifted in lyrical absurdity to a wonderfully rhythmic visual poetry. Muziek van Beneden has the look of an Alex van Warmerdam film set to music, but feels warmer.” – De Volkskrant ★★★★
“But before we get there, we have had the immense pleasure of listening to Radek Fedyk, the musical millipede who runs the shop. (…) Every morning he breathes new life into the little street with his serenades and he keeps drawing the most wonderful melodies from his many different instruments.” – Theaterkrant ★★★
This show comes with a comprehensive programme. The foyer at Podium Hoge Woerd will be magically transformed into a place for encounter. Visitors to Muziek van Beneden can send each other letters to get to know each other better. There’s a post office and a real-life miniature postman to deliver the letters to the recipients.
The work of music theatre company Het Houten Huis is like a parallel for life itself; it can make screechy- scratchy noises and sometimes unexpected guests turn up. In the daytime the company plays to school groups from toddlers to teens. But when the grownups leave the theatre at night with the same quiet disbelief, they prove that emotion and imagination are not bound by age. In 2017 Het Houten Huis came to Tweetakt with Onbekend Land and in 2018 with Hoe licht kan een wolk zijn, a coproduction with Feikes Huis.
