Festival Tweetakt is an annual arts festival in Utrecht for everyone, with theater, music and art by (inter)national creators.
Studying at a conservatory is of course no guarantee for making sick music, but these three diamonds in the rough prove that studying music and making great pop music can go hand-in-hand. Tweetakt proudly presents these fantastic acts which are, according to our predictions, at the start of a glorious career in the pop business.
Alchi is Krijn Moons, he makes organic electronic music. His work is carried by rousing grooves and melancholy harmonies full of raw, uneven sounds that paint an alienating world. The sound of Alchi is strongly colored by old tape machines and cheap mixing panels, which bring together all ‘just not pure’ synthesizers, guitar parts and percussion grooves. Versatile producer with influences from Boards of Canada, Four Tet and Weval, student at the Musician 3.0 training at the HKU.
The Icelandic roots of frontwoman Rósa Trujillo resonate in the music that makes the brand new indie band FOSS. Rósa developed her demos together with musical partner Martijn Bressers into songs and together with producer Roy van Rosendaal into an EP with five songs. The idea of playing with a band was already in the air, but this did not take shape until they were done in the studio. With Stijn Post, Tim Visser and Thomas Bosveld, also from the HKU Music and Technology course, they now form FOSS. They support Rósa’s sultry voice with synthesizer sounds and deliciously smooth drum beats.
KUZKO is a Rotterdam indie-electro duo. They know each other from the pop department of Codarts. After a year of preparation behind the scenes, it is now time to come into the spotlights. On the stage, the duo is assisted by a six-piece live band. Quirky and cheerful songs with a nod to social themes such as consumerism, high school dramas and cliché love adventures. KUZKO proved in 2018 that their infectious indie pop works, by running off with the main prize of Art Rocks, the music competition that fuses music and visual art.
Tato Wesselo is the name, Le Motat is the formation! This band is looking for borders to cross. The beautiful, the absurd, the sensitive, the hard; everything is covered in the form of catchy songs and short text performances. Musically you can characterize it as a Dutch-speaking, dirty, electronic pop. In terms of performance it is a one of a kind, so the Musician 3.0 training from the HKU, where you are not tied to instrument, style or genre, perfectly fits Le Motat.
The brand new Nederpop act Wies has the perfect triangular dynamics of pop, electronics and the raging organic. Think of Ramses Shaffy meets alt-J, or Spinvis meets The Black Keys. The attitude with which frontwoman Jeanne Rouwendael gives the audience insights into her honest frustrations, pains and dissatisfactions tells its own story. The musicians know each other from the pop department of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Despite the fact that they have only just formed a band, they have already played in venues such as Melkweg, Paradiso and TivoliVredenburg and they won the Amsterdam Popprijs 2018.
