Festival Tweetakt 2020
27 March till 14 June

Fort Ruigenhoek, Groenekan

A film projector helps you journey through the collective memory of things humanity has forgotten.

Since its origins, humanity has collected and processed an infinite amount of information. But lots of information has become lost, as well. Individually, we forget what we did ten years ago, and collectively we forget what we did 100 or 1000 years ago. With The Forgotten the artistic duo TOCHKA wants to shed some light on the countless things that were deemed unworthy of remembering over the centuries.

The medium of film is the starting point for The Forgotten. In the digital age, film no longer has a physical presence. We watch films on the internet. Everything is data, elusive as smoke, and it remains to be seen how we are going to save these data for posterity. For this installation TOCHKA has created a film projector, using a forgotten technology: the ‘Théâtre Optique’, invented by Charles-Émile Reynaud in 1888. Théâtre Optique was a film projection system that could play and project animated images. Presenting the drawings in quick succession created the illusion of movement. In The Forgotten the film projector sends us on a journey through the collective memory of the things humanity has forgotten: the black hole at the back of the human brain.

Filmmakers Takeshi Nagata (Japan, 1978) and Kazue Monno (japan, 1978), live in the Netherlands and have formed the creative duo TOCHKA since 1998. They like to work with light painting-animation: a mix of photographs with long exposure times and stop-motion animation.

Admission to The Forgotten is free to visitors of the fort. Day-tickets to Fort Ruigenhoek are available from the box office at the fort. No online ticket sales. For further information about Tweetakt at Fort Ruigenhoek, visit here.
