Karel van der Eijk

Fort Ruigenhoek, Groenekan

Inspired by HAK, Luyks and Calvé.

Karel’s brain is fun, with dozens of wondrous ideas popping up. It seems he builds whatever he feels like, such as this organ of jar lids. The organ consists of a table stacked with around thirty jars. Every jar has a lid. Whenever you press a key, it sets off a tiny motor that unscrews the lid. It rattles across the jar’s screw thread. The different lids on different jar sizes produce different tones.

Het Potdekselorgel is a cheerful musical installation. It immediately makes you feel like creating something. And you can! You get to press the keys and create your own compositions. It is highly infectious. So: if you can’t get enough, hurry home and scour the kitchen cabinets to find inspiration.

Karel van der Eijk (The Hague, 1961) graduated from the ArtEZ art academy Arnhem in 1992. He creates sound objects and installations that move and make sounds. When he started, he made objects that were a lot like musical instruments, like this organ. You can place it anywhere. Later, he began building colossal installations, made especially for the surroundings in which they are placed. Some of them move with one press of a button, others he (or his audience) plays like instruments. Karel also creates inflatable sculptures, made from bin liners, carrier bags, discarded plastics, and handmade flutes. Like bagpipes. Sometimes Karel himself plays them. But there are works that are fan-operated, which are blown to giant proportions, creating the volume of a flute orchestra.

Admission to Het Potdekselorgelis free to visitors of the fort. Day-tickets to Fort Ruigenhoek are available from the box office at the fort. No online ticket sales. For further information about Tweetakt at Fort Ruigenhoek, visit here.
