Festival Tweetakt 2020
27 March till 14 June

Liesbeth Gritter (Kassys)

Fort Ruigenhoek, Groenekan

Stretched-out little moments.

Liesbeth Gritter is fascinated by everyday moments, like recognising somebody in the street, greeting someone, giving a compliment, comforting and thanking someone. Brief, innocent moments that we don’t really think about. Usually they come with a certain set of desired, polite behaviours that we have been taught: a smile, a nod, set phrases. This kind of behaviour has a certain set ‘logical’ duration; when it takes longer, it quickly becomes unreliable, awkward, painful, funny, overdone, touching, or absurd. Just think of someone taking too long to say goodbye. Or someone who takes too long shaking your hand to congratulate you.

For Tweetakt Liesbeth has created a new work, consisting of three videos. Each of them shows four people displaying the same behaviour at the same time. But those moments that are usually brief are now stretched out to unrealistic lengths. It turns normal automatic behaviour to conscious behaviour. The work is about acting and pretending. In earlier work Liesbeth has placed people and animals alongside each other. As she has done here. Animals behave very differently from people. They are not bothered with being polite, they act on instinct. They are simpler. They are unashamed and don’t use voices to sound funnier. They are unburdened by ‘social interference’, in Liesbeth’s words.

Every year Festival Tweetakt asks a performing artist to create a piece of visual art for Fort Ruigenhoek.  Benjamin Verdonck, Jetse Batelaan and Ugo Dehaes did it in previous years. This year we have asked Liesbeth. Liesbeth Gritter studied at Minerva academy of fine arts in Groningen and attended the Master’s at DasArts in Amsterdam. In 1999 she and Mette van der Sijs founded Kassys. Kassys creates plays and films based on their curiosity for, vexation with, amazement at and worries about the mechanisms behind human behaviour over. Kassys came to Tweetakt with their shows ALLEEN (2018), Good Cop Bad Cop (2011) and Horizon (2010).

Admission to Betsie, Harm, Thijs, Floris & Hugo is free to visitors of the fort. Day-tickets to Fort Ruigenhoek are available from the box office at the fort. No online ticket sales. For further information about Tweetakt at Fort Ruigenhoek, visit here.
