Festival Tweetakt is an annual arts festival in Utrecht for everyone, with theater, music and art by (inter)national creators.
Submerge into a bunker full of contradictions.
When Laura Jatkowski entered the bunker at Fort Ruigenhoek, she felt the distinct change from outside to inside: from bright to dark, from warm to cold, from everyday noise to silence, from liveliness to a strong sense of absence.
She sensed something vulnerable in the solid concrete construction. After all, bunkers have a strong, sturdy appeal, but they are also hidden away, and covered. It reveals some of its strength, while keeping some of it hidden. Laura thought about the original purpose of the fort: protecting and defending the Dutch waterways. She realised: protecting is a weird thing. Protecting is always directed towards something else. You protect one thing from another, form outside, possible threats, loss, damages or injuries.
Keeping in mind all these thoughts, Laura created an installation for the bunker consisting of light and sound recordings. You hear different people singing. But it sounds as if you’re not supposed to hear these voices. It sounds like something private, but you can hear them. It’s familiar, strange and unsettling at the same time.
Laura Jatkowski (Berlin, 1990) studied traditional stone carving in Berlin. She then went on to study art in Glasgow and then to the KABK in The Hague. Last year her graduation work was presented at the fort: Untrammelled, away she goes (2017). An installation in which she had created new shapes out of bicycle frames, which made visitors think. Her work has been presented at shows in The Hague, Ballymaloe and Belfast.
Admission to Canaries is free to visitors of the fort. Day-tickets to Fort Ruigenhoek are available from the box office at the fort. No online ticket sales. For further information about Tweetakt at Fort Ruigenhoek, visit here.
