Johan Rijpma

Fort Ruigenhoek, Groenekan

By looking at each other, we determine who we are for each other.

Johan Rijpma has created an installation that shows you yourself through another person’s eyes. And how the other person sees you. In his own words:

“In my head, I create my own image of you. While you create your image of me. Since we know this of each other, I also create my image of your image of me. While you create your image of my image of you. By looking at each other we thus determine who we are for each other.”

Sjen Sjen is Frysian (Johan’s mother tongue), and it means ‘seeing seeing’. More than a piece of art to look at, Sjen Sjen is a piece of art to look through. Seeing twice. So: bring someone and get to work. Circle around each other and observe the two of you watching each other in the reflections and geometric shapes: how do you see the other person and how do they see you? See yourself from another person’s perspective.

Johan Rijpma (Utrecht, 1984) studied Art, Technology and Media at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht. He creates films, music videos, animated films, installations and other works of art. His early work was inspired by that which lay outside of himself, outside his control. In the film Tape Generations (at Tweetakt 2015) for instance, showed rolls of tape stuck to the bottom of a table top, rolling down by the force of gravity. In Primary Expansion (Tweetakt 2016) a balloon covered in paint was inflated, with the paint stretching and breaking. In addition to unpredictability, his work of the past few years has dealt with predicting, watching and interpretation. And in Sjen Sjen the viewers, which is you, are the unpredictable element. Your thoughts, your imagination and associations will never be fully understood by Johan. Which means they fall outside of his control.

Admission to Sjen Sjen is free to visitors of the fort. Day-tickets to Fort Ruigenhoek are available from the box office at the fort. No online ticket sales. For further information about Tweetakt at Fort Ruigenhoek, visit here.
