Mariska de Groot

Fort Ruigenhoek, Groenekan

Step inside a film projector and enjoy the magic of optical sound.

Mariska de Groot is fascinated by old film projectors. Projectors like these have one lamp to project the image on the film roll and one to read the sound roll. This is how it works: the sound roll consists of black strips that don’t let any light through and white stripes that do. It makes the light flicker. A machine transforms the flickering into sound. If there are many stripes per second, the sound is high-pitched, if there are less, the sound is low. Optical sound, it’s called.

Mariska discovered that the element that transforms light into sound is super small. She thought: “I want to be able to stand inside it, and if I can’t shrink, the machine will just have to get bigger.” She set to work and built her CineChine. A huge machine. You stand inside it surrounded by a kind of landscape of objects that remind you of a dismantled film projector. As you watch projected graphic patterns, you hear the projections being transformed into sound.

Mariska made the first version CineChine in 2012. When she started, she made cinematic arrangements; these days she creates a kind of landscape for you to wander across. It depends on the space, so the composition changes every time.

Mariska de Groot (The Hague, 1982) is a light and sound artist. She studied graphic design at ArteZ in Arnhem and got her Master’s in ArtScience Interfaculty in 2012. Her work has been presented at EYE and ADE 2016.

Admission to CineChine is free to visitors of the fort. Day-tickets to Fort Ruigenhoek are available from the box office at the fort. No online ticket sales. For further information about Tweetakt at Fort Ruigenhoek, visit here.
