Catinka Kersten

Fort Ruigenhoek, Groenekan

A five-sculpture installation that form both a stream and a bridge.

What you are looking at, are five concrete bears. This piece by Catinka Kersten tells the story of Bear Bruun, a character from the fable of Van den vos Reynaerde. To Catinka, he is the most human of all the characters. He is always trying to do the right thing, but is forever distracted and misled, which means he’s only making things worse, despite his good intentions. And when he has been put through the wringer, he gives up, drops himself into a small stream and allows himself to be swept along…

Catinka: “In fables, bears are often big, greedy brutes whose intentions aren’t necessarily evil, but who end up doing more evil than good. I’m often afraid this is exactly my role in this world. Daer hi vant de meesten stroom is a five-sculpture installation that forms both a stream and a bridge. It is the way I feel as part of ‘the people’.”

Catinka Kersten (Leiderdorp, 1988) graduated from The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in 2013. Museum Beelden aan Zee and Museum Voorlinden have purchased works by this young artist. In 2016 she was awarded the Mondriaan Fund’s Stipendium Emerging Artists. For Festival Tweetakt she created the piece Drie olifanten in 2018. Not in concrete, but three big cuddly toys, made from soft grey fabric, which children could play with.

Admission to Daer hi vant den meesten stroom is free to visitors of the fort. Day-tickets to Fort Ruigenhoek are available from the box office at the fort. No online ticket sales. For further information about Tweetakt at Fort Ruigenhoek, visit here.
