Festival Tweetakt is an annual arts festival in Utrecht for everyone, with theater, music and art by (inter)national creators.
Hold your breath – it will be over before you know it
You’ll probably be familiar with this. You’re sitting at a table with a candle in front of you. You can’t help it, you have to blow. Softly. The flame starts to flicker. The tension mounts. You don’t want the flame to actually die, because that would mean the tension dissipates. It should just stay aflame. That’s what it’s about. This is the kind of tension that is central to Bram De Jonghe’s work.
This is Bram’s fourth work in which he plays with the viability of a flame. In earlier works he used an air pump, a glass bell jar and a kind of tiny ski lift with a candle mounted on it. The speed of the movement caused the flame to flicker. In all these works he went in search of this tension: the tension between too fast and too slow, too long or too short. A flame is viable only halfway between the two extremes, which gives it almost human qualities.
To Bram, the fascinating thing about making art is that you reach a point where you decide the art work is finished. From then on, it behaves like a work of art, and as its creator, you have to let it go. You cannot control responses, reviews or interpretations.
Bram De Jonghe (Ostend, 1985) studied at Academie Luca, the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent and the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux. He holds a master’s in fine arts and a master’s in graphic design. Bram lives and works in The Hague and is a member of the artist-run gallery Billytown. He teaches visual art and sculpture at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague.
