Intense dance performance about jumpstyle, youth culture and modern forms of online rebellion
In TO DA BONE the electro dance style jumpstyle is the central point of focus. Jumpstyle is a physically strenuous dance, with many wide and large leg movements. The dance style originated in the Netherlands and Belgium in the late 90’s and came back as a hype in the Netherlands ten years ago.
Worldwide, a close-knit community and subculture around jumpstyle has emerged, based on a shared passion and identity. Young people, who teach themselves the movements and often do not know other ‘jumpers’ in their immediate environment, film their routines and put them online and on social media. Others respond to this with their own videos, which creates a lively exchange of dance styles and ideas. The three choreographers of (LA) HORDE see in this online subculture an intimate, extremely physical form of youth rebellion against the established order.
In TO DA BONE, the online jumpstyle community has a presence in the physical, offline world. Together with young people from the subculture, (LA) HORDE transformed the short dance routines, which usually last only half a minute, into an evening-filling dance performance. The performers are young jumpers from all over the world, each with a unique dance style and large fan base. TO DA BONE is also a tribute to these young people, who find their own path through their dance and subculture.
(LA)HORDE is a collective of three artists: Marine Brutti, Jonathan Debrouwer and Arthur Harel. Their oeuvre includes video installations, performance, direction and choreographic creation.
