Hands are something you give. Through our hands we make contact with each other and with the world. Hands test to see if something isn’t too hot or too cold. They can be tender but can also turn into fists. Hands are carved with callouses full of stories. Hands allow you to travel through time, from the handprints in ancient caves to the hands on our stage that quietly sign.
Talking Hands is a unique cross-over performance in which Dutch Sign Language (DSL) is integrated in a remarkable way. The cast is extremely versatile. The DSL interpreter is also a professional dancer and the actors are just as skilful behind the cameras as in front of them. Fascinating details are filmed right before your eyes and projected onto a large screen. Singer and ud player Jawa Manla sings gorgeous Arabic sounds that seamlessly flow with Gábor Tarján’s electronic music. In short: five people of completely different backgrounds work as if they were the five vingers of a hand.
In this performance, spoken texts and song lyrics are translated by a DSL interpreter who sings, acts and moves as a full member of the cast. The performance is suitable for everyone from aged 9 whether or not you use sign language.
