A sung fable about a very ordinary eight-year-old girl.
Every morning a rabbit/sea bass/chicken walks to her primary school on the other side of town with two mouflons/slugs/barnacle geese. In mister ring snake/porpoise/lama’s class she has lots of fun, but also some trouble paying attention. A pigeon/stone marten/dairy cow comes to observe her in the classroom. How can they help her better? Shouldn’t she be going to a different school? On trembling knees/fins/wings she gets into the taxi van driven by the shrew/tapir/reed warbler. Will they have a teacher there who is just as nice? And what is she to do about her birthday party this spring?
In this show-box populated by animals, frayed nerves and good intentions, Theater Artemis turns a set of very ordinary things into a dream-like ‘musical’. A mythical show featuring live singing and music, about special needs teachers, playing badminton and being just a little different.
Theater Artemis is a TYA-company from Den Bosch that makes interactive and anarchist plays. The kind of theatre that disregards, with help from its audience, its own rules. Artistic director Jetse Batelaan is building an impressive body of work at Theater Artemis and won multiple prizes for his shows these past few years. In January 2019 he was the first Dutch person to win a Silver Lion for Theatre at the Venice Biennial, for his highly personal and innovative approach to stage work.
