Does playing offer the ultimate freedom, or does it merely impose rules of play?

In the dance shows created by kabinet k, everything is about playing. In as long as we are playing, playing even takes a starring role. It’s as if this family show were a playground, where the infectious nature of playing forms the starting point for every move and every interpretation. Playing as an inexhaustible source of impulses. Playing by rules in the hands of people who use them, follow them, change them, bend them, manipulate and ignore them… Playing as a place for joy and harmony, but also of conflict and power. Playing as a mirror of our options, our nature, our society. The children in the cast and behind the instruments steal the show.

“There are no rules, there is only unbridled imagination. What a joy to watch. (…) Never before has kabinet k shown its punky side so clearly.” – De Standaard

“Playing is just as important in life as breathing or eating. Without play, there is no life.” – Joke Lauryns

about the makers

kabinet k is the company founded by Flemish choreographers Joke Lauryns and Kwint Manshoven. In their dance shows they work with professional dancers alongside children, and often, they dance themselves. Instead of teaching their dancers steps and tricks, they depart from the dancers’ own movements. Because, young children, older children, young adults or older adults; they all have their own way of moving. Having children in the cast makes their shows accessible to audiences of all ages. kabinet k came to Tweetakt before, e.g. with Horses (2017), Unfold (2015), Rauw (2014) and I see you (2012).

Thomas Smetryns is a composer of experimental music. He likes to go in search of music from the past or from different worlds, and translates it to a contemporary context or places different kinds of music alongside each other. He has been affiliated with LOD muziektheater since 2008. For as long as we are playing he has composed music that is performed by the children themselves.

hetpaleis is a performing arts house for children, young people and artists based in Antwerp city centre. It is the biggest TYA company in the Benelux countries. hetpaleis creates, presents and organises theatre and dance productions, music performances, arts education workshops and other activities and intends to make these accessible to wide and super diverse audiences.
